Biochemical function:

Humic acids are characterised by their strong propensity to bond with foreign substances and intruders. Thus, they have cleaning properties which are essential for the connective tissue. Humic acids form a thin layer in the gastro-intestinal tract, where they are instrumental in eliminating heavy metals thanks to their adsorptive properties (to adsorb = to accumulate gases, vapours or solutes on the surface of particularly porous solids). Forming this film enables humic acids to enter even the smallest openings and thus to protect sensitive tissue.
 

Natural sources:

Humins, alongside fulvic acids and humic acids, are constituents of humus. All three substances are released during biodegradation of plant material and may be found in e.g. soils, moor and turf.
